Maternal effects and beyond: non-genetic influences of mothers on the fitness of their progeny

Session Convener: Susan Sogard, NOAA/NMFS/SWFSC, Santa Cruz, CA

Session description: Mothers and sometimes fathers have multiple means of affecting the success of their offspring beyond determining their genetic constitution. A large body of literature documents a pattern of older/larger females producing disproportionately more offspring (via higher weight-specific fecundity) that are often better provisioned than offspring produced by younger/smaller females, potentially as a function of greater energy reserves or more experience in spawning activity. These patterns suggest that not all larvae are created equal and spawning stock biomass maybe an inadequate metric of reproductive capacity. More recent studies suggest that parents can shape the potential success of their offspring not only through energy allocation mechanisms, but also through their exposure to particular environmental conditions. Termed transgenerational plasticity, or TGP, this mechanism can modify reaction norms of offspring such that they better match the conditions, such as temperature, experienced by their parents. This session will explore the varying sources of parental effects, the importance of age diversity to population stability, and the implications of non-genetic plasticity for adaptation to climate change.
